USFWS rules on status of Monarch Butterfly

Even though the eastern population of Monarchs declined from 384 million in 1996 to 60 million last year, on December 16, 2020, the US Fish & Wildlife Service determined that listing the Monarch Butterfly as an endangered species was warranted but precluded — meaning the agency has higher priorities for its limited resources.
